Im trying to create pieces that say something these days.. Im hoping these tell a bit of story... instead of just being free standing characters

ah, cool. Try stuff out using 2 or more characters interacting. Like a bear befriending a little bluebird or soemthing simple. a little kid that has spilled milk in a grocery aisle while an old lady with a cart has just rounded the corner on the scene gives him a scolding look. stuff like that.
For sure.. Im gonna try and keep this kind of stuff going for a while.. this and studying proper anatomy of animals and people... then going back to design...
